Description
Extremely showy, highly adaptable and easy to grow, the Magnus Coneflower is an award winning native perennial that deserves a place in every garden where it will grow, which is almost anywhere! Very large and long-lasting flowers with rosy purple petals, which stand up instead of drooping, surround a large orange-bronze center cone. The flowers are perched atop sturdy stems that rise well above the foliage and are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. The butterflies and hummingbirds will thank you for planting this one. If spent flowers are left on the plant the black cones provide winter interest in the garden and also seeds for goldfinches and other birds. Drought, deer, heat, humidity, and poor soil tolerant…what more can we ask for!
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Magnus Purple Coneflower is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings in perennial and sunny woodland borders and garden beds. A fine addition to butterfly, cut flower, cottage, wildflower and purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 1.5 to 2 feet apart for groupings
Growing Preferences
Magnus Purple Coneflower is very easy to grow. It is a highly adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought, heat, humidity and poor soil. It will grow in most any average soil that is moist to somewhat dry and well-drained. It flowers best in full sun but will also do well and bloom in part shade. We suggest a minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Spent flowers can be removed through the long bloom season. That said, spent flowers/seed heads can be left on the plant for winter interest and to feed the birds.
