Description
‘Edge of Night’ is the newest addition to the Summerific Hibiscus series, and like all the others is one that both northern and southern gardeners can grow and enjoy outdoors year as a long-blooming hardy perennial all the way to USDA Zone 4, where temps go as low as -30F. Standing only 3 feet tall and about 4 feet wide, Edge of Night is one of if not the most compact to date, but the abundant flowers are just as large and the leaves the darkest we’ve seen on any hardy hibiscus. From early to mid summer through early fall, large flowers up to 8 inches in diameter with overlapping bubblegum pink petals and dark pink veining have a mesmerizing 3D effect. Jet black leaves provide a remarkable contrast to the bright flowers. Not only you will enjoy this marvelous plant, your butterfly and hummingbirds will thank you for including it in your garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, the Edge of Night Hibiscus makes a bold and beautiful specimen in the landscape or in large containers. Especially impressive in groupings of three or as a colorful hedge. Because it blooms all summer and into fall, and has such bold foliage, it makes a nice backdrop or centerpiece in flower gardens. A natural in butterfly and hummingbird gardens and for adding a tropical flare to your outdoor living spaces.
Suggested Spacing:Â 3.5 to 4 feet apart for hedge;Â 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Hardy Hibiscus are very easy to grow. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine, though some shade is tolerated. During prolonged periods of summer drought plants will appreciate supplemental water to bloom their best. Maintenance is minimal requiring just one pruning a year to prune plants back to ground when new growth begins to emerge in spring.
