Description
A North American native plant that likes life on the wet side and flowers all summer long, White Star Grass is an exotic looking grassy perennial plant perfect for planting in those consistently moist to boggy areas in the landscape or garden. Its most outstanding feature are the showy, white, star-shaped flower bracts perched on sturdy stems that rise above clumps of thin, grassy green foliage. In wet or boggy sites it spreads to form thick patches but in average garden soils spreads more slowly to form a clump. Also excellent for containers that can be situated in the margins of the garden pond.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright clump 15 to 18 inches tall and spreading to 18 inches or more, White Star Grass is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings or mass plantings in consistently moist to wet areas. In boggy areas it will spread to form a colony. Also useful in pots, planters and other containers which can be placed on the patio or in the margins of the garden pond. A fine addition to rain gardens, bog gardens, ornamental grass gardens, rock gardens, and white theme gardens.
Growing Preferences
White Star Grass is easy to grow in most any consistently moist to wet soil of average fertility in full sun to part shade. It prefers a loam soil. Grows well in standing water so is suitable for use in the garden pond with the base of the plant at water level or higher. Maintenance is minimal. If necessary, the foliage can be refreshed annually in late winter by cutting back the old stems. After doing so, bright, new greenery will emerge in spring.
